This impressive model set a new standard of detailing in diecast toys when it was released in 1968. Finished in red with white footplates and yellow ladders, with various silver plated plastic and brass effect metal components.
The main ladder is mounted on a turntable and can be raised and lowered by turning a knob at the side. Another knob operates a corded mechanism to extend the 3-piece ladder to a maximum length of about 420mm. A further 6 extension ladders are stowed in the trailer and can be removed and clipped together. The trailer may be detached from the tractor unit, and is equipped with retractable stabilisers. There are twin jewelled headlights and also twin 'ruby' lamps at the front. The wheels are cast metal with black tyres, double on the tractor's rear axle, and all axles have suspension.
The real vehicle was designed to deal with fires in the skyscrapers of New York and other cities, so it needed to carry long ladders yet be capable of manoeuvring around the street corners. This was achieved by building a long, articulated vehicle with steerable wheels on the rear of the trailer. These were operated by a crew member seated at the rear of the trailer with a separate steering wheel. This crew member is reproduced in the model, seated high above the ladders and hanging on to his helmet!
This example is in excellent condition, with all 6 fire crew present and correct. There is a small chip on one trailer wheel arch and a couple of other small marks elsewhere. The decals are perfect and the aerial, mirrors and other silver parts are intact.
The box is fair-to-good, with some wear around the flaps and a replacement window The leaflet detailing how to re-string the extending ladder, should you need to, is still present although a bit discoloured.
