Dinky Miniatures

The Mini Dinky range was launched in 1967/68, with cars in 1:65 scale and construction equipment in smaller scales. The models were made in Hong Kong apart from two racing cars made by Best Box (efsi) in the Netherlands. The packaging consisted of red plastic 'garages' with transparent sides and roof. Mini Dinky was short-lived, the range being withdrawn in 1969/70, and 13 of the 32 models never went into full production and are extremely rare today.

The Dinky Toys brand was acquired by Airfix Products in 1971. A new range of miniature Dinky Toys, aimed at competing with Matchbox, Hot Wheels and Corgi Juniors, was produced in Hong Kong on behalf of Airfix and launched in 1980. At this time the Dinky and Meccano ranges were in dire straits, and Airfix itself went bust in early 1981 and was acquired by Palitoy. Probably because of the company's troubles, these 'Airfix Dinkies' made little impression on the shelves of UK toy shops.
